I am fascinated with patterns in all forms. I listen for repeats in music as it plays on the radio. I look for the single motif in a complex cloth. I examine disease characteristics of a sick plant to determine the best treatment.
In this series I investigate microscopic patterns, rendering visible biological forms in the highly saturated colors of MRI scans. My choice of mediums is specific. Over the last three centuries, fabric designers employed gouache for its ease of use and luminous color. Books were filled with these designs for use in both manufacturing and custom ordering. Pattern is again found in the wool I use to felt. It maintains the DNA structure (and subsequent pattern) from the sheep it derived.
As mathematician and philosopher Alfred North Whitehead noted, "Art is the imposing of a pattern on experience, and our aesthetic enjoyment is recognition of the pattern." There is beauty in the microscopic landscape. I aim to bring delight with these images rather than focus on the abject horror frequently associated with the body.
